About Mother of Pearl

Mother of Pearl is the iridescent coating on the inside of mollusk shells. It is so named because when an irritant gets inside the shell, the shell protects itself by coating the irritant with the same material (nacre) of its lining that creates pearls, therefore this substance is the creator- or Mother of Pearl.

The lustre of the Mother of Pearl is the result of both surface and internal refection of light.

Mother of Pearl has been used for thousands of years. It was used by the ancient Egyptians and Sumerians. Inlay work has also been used in East Asian and Islamic religious art. In the west Mother of Pearl became extremey popular during the Victorian era.

In the 1800s the leaders of the London street traders (known as Costermongers) began to decorate their hand-me-down suits with hundreds ( sometimes thousands) of Mother of Pearl buttons. These people where known as "Pearly Kings" and "Pearly Queens"

Mother of Pearl has a calming effect when you wear it. It will reduce your stress and feelings of aggressiveness. It will give you clearer thoughts and facilitate better expression. The resonating energies of Mother of Pearl will enhance your communication skills and guide you in expressing yourself in a more effective way.
